gute LSD info vom FF squad Katman:
not sure if your LSD curiosity has been fulfilled yet, but my aftermarket LSD hymen was broken by a Wavetrac gear type LSD back in '09. My experience of the wavetrac to OEM LSD was a night n day difference in regards to feedback on the race track (road race). I've said this in the past, but the wavetrac is what the OEM LSD should be....makes the oe lsd feel like an open diff in comparison. I've recently upgraded to an OS Giken clutch type LSD and that's a night n day difference over the Wavetrac, and well, a semi-whole new beast to learn as far as feedback goes on-track.

What I've noticed from OE to Wavetrac to OS Giken LSD's is that you learn to stay OFF throttle less, the better the LSD gets. For instance, with the OE LSD you're always on/off throttle to either induce oversteer or understeer to maintain grip and vehicle control depending on the type of turn you're setting up for or in the midst of. With the Wavetrac that same effect applies but you're on/off throttling is lessened bcuz the LSD is doing a better job of limiting slip within the differential better than the OE LSD. With the clutch type its almost a whole other ball game. The clutch type LSD characteristic is that it feels like it 'sucks' you into the turn (its a crazy cheater feeling in a way LOL) but you gotta stay on throttle through most of the turn otherwise the understeer the clutch type is known for begins to kick in. That annoying clutch type lsd understeer characteristic is just 'part of the beast'. you either gotta learn to live with it or do some suspension changes to help minimize it (larger rear swaybar or stiffer rear springs for instance). This is one reason you gotta do your homework with the clutch type LSD's. For an FF honda and clutch type, you want like a 1-way LSD...I'd stay away from a 1.5 or 2 way..you'll just be in understeer city.

Maintenance is another aspect of the clutch type that needs to be taken into account as well. Some...most of them...need special gear oil for proper operation that also helps minimize chatter/noise, and over time the clutch packs need to get replaced. Gear type LSD's such as the wavetrac, just use regular cheap honda MTF and almost dont need any maintenancing. Clutch types are a bit more higher tech than gear type and require a little more attention.

1 way = LSD is fully locking while on throttle only (which is what the Type-R LSD pretty much is) and no locking when off throttle.
1.5 way = same as 1 way but when you're off throttle the diff is locking half way (.5). This locking when off throttle, acts kinda like a brake and will slow you down along with probably inducing that pesky understeer...like a bit too much unless you get use to it and learn it.
2 way = Same as 1.5 way but it fully locks 1 way when off throttle instead of halfway, which means understeer is going to own your life haha.

Sorry for the in depth details on the clutch type, as you're probably not going this route anyways lol, but knowing about em doesn't hurt!

in response to your question, yes there is no difference between the oem Z3 and type-R LSD's, both are of the helical gear type.

So, if you're not planning to track very often, i wouldnt bother going aftermarket LSD, just stick with the oem LSD...its sufficient enough. Or if you have an itch, go wavetrac or Mfactory gear type LSD, whichever you can afford...both are great LSD's.
